Starter Train Set Advice

Welcome to the worlds most enjoyable hobby.

A few recommendations from the experienced staff at Broughdale Hobby to make model railroading a more enjoyable, satisfying and lifelong hobby.

You may have recently purchased a train set that includes a locomotive, a few cars,
a caboose, circle of track and a power pack.

We recommend:-

• Place the track layout on a sheet of plywood (4' x 8'). This will prevent damage to the track. Raise it off the floor. A light frame of 4" x 1" lumber will make it less flexible and accommodate under table wiring and accessories.  It can be leaned against a wall when not in use.  Fluff and dirt from pets etc. will not so easily get in the locomotive motor.
  
  

• Fix the track to the plywood, we suggest Atlas Track nails, these are more suitable than other nails due to size, colour, shape and strength. Do not hammer the nail, push into soft plywood  with pliers. The track does not need to be pounded, the track only needs to be attached lightly. Put one nail per track length at one end.
  
  
• Tighten rail joiners. This provides electrical continuity for trouble free operation.  Bend the end of each rail joiner up slightly so that it has positive contact with the rail.
  
  
• Keep the track and locomotive wheels clean. This can be done with a track cleaner rubber abrasive block. Electro-chemical action causes all rail/wheel contact surfaces to form insulating deposits. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL!
  
  
• The equipment has come a long way and has been in storage, where any oil may have dried.  Most locomotives will need oil at some point. Check. Use no more than a drop. Use plastic compatible oil.  
  
  
• If your power supply came in the box with the train set consider upgrading to a larger power pack as your layout expands. Generally the smaller power packs are good for starting, and as auxiliary supply for lights and powered switches later on. (Ensure it is plugged in and the track is wired to the variable DC terminals).
  
  
• Take time to read the instructions before starting, is our best advice.
